China’s three-wheelers are going electric

Love them or hate them, chingchis keep Pakistan moving. Now imagine one with no engine roar and no petrol bill.

In China, that’s already happening at scale. In Yanshi, a district of Luoyang in central China that holds over a third of the country’s three-wheeler capacity, electric models now make up 38 percent of what local makers build. Yanshi’s makers are selling fast abroad too: 55,000 three-wheelers shipped overseas in the first half of 2026, after 98,000 in all of 2025.

Pakistan is heading the same way. Last November, Punjab moved to phase out production of petrol motorcycle rickshaws to fight smog. Islamabad is subsidising e-bikes and e-rickshaws, and its EV policy wants 30 percent of new vehicles produced to be electric by 2030.

The catch is price. Last year, Pakistan’s first licensed e-rickshaw cost more than twice as much as a petrol one, and its batteries came from China.

So the real question is how fast, and how cheap.

Would you ride an electric chingchi? 🛺⚡
