From salty wasteland to a “silver beach” of green

It’s hard to imagine that this lush goji berry manor in Ningxia, northwest China, was once a harsh saline-alkali land.

At Bairuiyuan Yinhong Zishu Goji Berry Manor, thousands of hectares of goji fields now thrive thanks to the power of science and nature.

To reduce pesticide use, researchers introduced a green pest-control method — using insects to fight insects. Tiny parasitoid wasps help protect the crops, with pest control effectiveness reaching over 90%.

Restoring the soil was another challenge. Through innovative salt-control and carbon-enrichment technologies, the once barren land saw soil conditions dramatically improve, while goji survival rates rose from 40% to 95%.

Today, the former salt flats have become a “silver beach” of harvest. Ningxia’s goji berry industry produces around 200,000 tons of fresh berries annually, with products reaching more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.
