Pakistan to Chair IMF, World Bank Boards in 2027 After 70 Years

Pakistan has been nominated to chair the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2027. The appointment would mark the country’s first time holding the position since 1953.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Federal Minister Ahad Khan Cheema will take on the chairmanship following the announcement at the 2026 World Bank Group and IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok.

The nomination provides Pakistan with an opportunity to participate in important discussions on the global economy and international financial cooperation. The Boards of Governors bring together representatives from member countries to discuss key issues related to economic stability, development financing and the work of both institutions.

During its term, Pakistan is expected to highlight the concerns of developing countries, particularly those related to access to financial resources, sustainable development and economic challenges. Developing economies often face difficulties in securing funds for infrastructure, climate resilience, public services and long-term growth.

The role could also allow Pakistan to contribute to discussions on improving cooperation between international financial institutions. Stronger coordination among these organisations can help countries address economic pressures and support development projects.

Another area of focus is expected to be encouraging private investment to support inclusive economic growth. Greater investment can help create employment opportunities, strengthen businesses and improve access to essential services, particularly in developing economies.

For Pakistan, the nomination comes at a time when international financial cooperation remains important for countries seeking economic stability and sustainable growth. Engagement with global financial institutions also provides an opportunity to share national priorities and discuss solutions to common economic challenges.

The chairmanship would give Pakistan a platform to participate in discussions involving governments and international financial leaders. It would also place attention on the country’s role in broader economic cooperation.

As preparations for the 2027 term continue, Pakistan’s participation is expected to focus on development financing, cooperation among member countries and policies that support long-term economic progress.
