Tennis star Sania Mirza has given a plot in Hyderabad, India, for a mosque rather than the tennis academy originally planned for the site. She has also pledged to cover the mosque’s construction costs in full.
A different purpose for the land
The decision responds to the local community’s need for a place to worship nearby. Land earmarked for sporting facilities will instead be used for the mosque, with Mirza providing both the site and funding for the building work.
Azharuddin lays foundation stone
Mohammad Azharuddin, the former Indian cricket captain, recently laid the mosque’s foundation stone. Mirza’s commitment to pay the entire construction bill extends her contribution beyond the land donation.
