Authorities Ban “Women’s Day” March in Lahore

The city of Lahore in eastern Pakistan has denied permission for a rally in honour of International Women’s Day, which is frequently met with vehement opposition there. Since 2018, marches have been organised in Pakistan’s major cities to raise awareness of women’s rights.

The decision was made, according to a notification sent to march organisers late Friday, and was justified by security concerns and the “controversial cards and banners” frequently shown by march participants.

Religious organisations frequently organise counter-protests known as “Haya (modesty)” marches to demand the preservation of Islamic principles. The Pakistani Aurat March organisers have regularly had to use the judicial system to defeat attempts to outlaw the march.

The banners and placards participants wave at the Aurat March demonstrations, which address issues including divorce, sexual harassment, and menstruation, have sparked controversy.

Participants and organisers have been accused of downplaying religious and cultural sensitivities while pushing Western, liberal principles.
