The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has confirmed the theft of data belonging to the family of Pakistan’s Army Chief. The theft allegedly took place when the chairman of NADRA was on vacation, and investigators are still looking for the suspects.
The ongoing investigation found that Tariq Malik, who was on leave in November 2022, was not present when the COAS’s family data was accessed. Malik began to see if anyone had access to his own personal data without his permission, which revealed the data theft.
According to reports, an effort was made to prevent the nomination of the present army leader in November 2022 using the information that was obtained unlawfully.
It is still unclear why certain lower-level employees of NADRA were allegedly charged with a crime, suspended, and held accountable. However, NADRA asserted that a number of industries, such as finance, telecommunications, law enforcement organizations, and other governmental institutions, use its identity verification services for legitimate purposes in accordance with a legally binding agreement that contains a non-disclosure clause.
The continuing investigation is a continuation of the strict safeguards put in place by NADRA to prevent improper access to citizen data.
