Over RS.1 Trillion Spent On Defence in Nine Months Of Fiscal Year: Finance Ministry

According to the Finance Ministry Revenue and Expenditure Report for the first nine months of the current fiscal year, defense spending has exceeded 1 trillion rupees. The federal government budget deficit has reached Rs 3,534 crore with total expenditure exceeding Rs 6,978 crore compared to Rs 3,543 crore in revenue. From July 2022 to March 2023, Rs. 3,582 crore was spent on loan repayments and interest. Interest and loan payments increased by Rs. 1,464 crore compared to the previous financial year.

During the current fiscal year’s first nine months, the government spent Rs428 billion on development projects, Rs524 billion on subsidies, and over Rs486 billion on pensions, according to the Finance Ministry’s revenue and expenditure report. In the same period, the Federal Board of Revenue collected Rs5,156 billion in taxes and non-tax revenue amounted to Rs1,240 billion. The provincial budget maintained a surplus of Rs456 billion. However, to cover the shortfall, the government obtained an additional Rs3,078 billion in loans.
