Karachi Mayor’s Election: Jamaat-e-Islami’s Petition Fixed for Urgent Hearing

Karachi: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday accepted a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) challenging the law to elect unelected persons as mayor and chairman.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had set June 15 as the date for the election of mayors across Sindh, before which the PPP provincial government brought a new law to allow unelected people to elect mayors and chairmen.

Karachi’s second largest party Jamaat-e-Islami, which won the local body elections, had challenged the law to elect unelected people as mayor and chairman in the Sindh High Court.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday issued notices to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Advocate General (AG) for June 13.

Justice Yousaf Ali Saeed said in his remarks that your case is of the nature of urgent hearing, it is understandable.

According to the schedule of the Election Commission of Pakistan, voting will be held from 8 am to 5 pm on June 15 for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor Karachi.
