The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has made an announcement to suspend mobile phone services in Karachi until the 10th of Muharram (July 29). This decision was taken based on the Ministry of Interior’s instructions to enhance security during the Muharram processions in the city.
The Sindh Government is also implementing strict security measures to ensure the safety of the Muharram processions. They have imposed a ban on pillion riding throughout the province on Muharram 9 and 10, and Section 144 has been implemented to prevent the “misuse” of loudspeakers. Offensive posters, banners, flyers, and walk chalking activities are also not allowed, and the use of televisions and VCRs in hotels and public places is prohibited.
To ensure security, individuals are not permitted to be on the roofs of houses, buildings, or other structures while a procession passes through the area. These precautions are aimed at maintaining a peaceful and safe environment during the Muharram observances.
