Democrat Ilhan Omar has been re-elected to the US House of Representatives, keeping her seat representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, Al Jazeera English reports.
In a report dated 4 November 2026, CBS News projected that Omar had defeated Republican nominee John Nagel on Tuesday evening, securing a fifth term. She has served the district since 2019. Its boundaries take in Minneapolis and nearby inner-ring suburbs, and CBS described it as the most Democratic district both in Minnesota and nationwide.
The Minnesota DFL Party endorsed Omar during its May state convention, and she went on to win the August primary decisively against Julie T. Le, Abena McKenzie, Latonya Reeves and Nate Schluter.
CBS also reported that Omar, who came from Somalia as a refugee, has repeatedly faced President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric. Following her first election, Trump told her to “go back” to her country of origin; he has also called her “garbage” and demanded an investigation. According to the 4 November report, Homeland Security investigators had raided her residence in Washington, D.C., the previous month, apparently in connection with immigration documents submitted for her by her late father during her childhood.
