General Elections Can Be Postponed Till March 2024: Interior Minister

The Interior Minister, Rana Sanaullah, said on Monday that the upcoming general elections in the country might be delayed until March of the next year. This is because the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) requires a new division of election areas based on the 2023 population count. Sanaullah mentioned this during a TV show. He explained that if the division of election areas is done, the elections could happen either in late February or early March of 2024.

This change in the election schedule is because the 2023 population count was recently approved by all four chief ministers and representatives of different political parties in a meeting called the Council of Common Interests (CCI). Sanaullah highlighted that it’s a legal duty to redo the division of election areas when there’s a new population count, as per the Constitution. This needs to be done before holding the general elections.
