Artificial Intelligence has brought several benefits to people, however, there are some dangers as well. PassGan, an AI tool developed for hacking passwords has surfaced on the internet. The name ‘PassGan’ has been derived from the fusion of “password” and GAN (Generative Adversarial Network).
The app has revolutionized password cracking by departing from traditional manual methods and instead analyzing authentic passwords sourced from real leaks. Although this AI-powered approach offers efficiency, it also poses a potential threat as cybercriminals could leverage its prowess to accelerate their password-cracking endeavors.
According to some tests run on the platform, the susceptibility of passwords to cracking was influenced both by their length and complexity. 81% of the passwords were deciphered in an impressive period of a month, 71% within a single day, 65% in less than an hour, and 51% in under a minute.
In addition, PassGan impressively cracked a seven-character password, complete with uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, in a mere six minutes. Even a 13-character password composed only of numbers was deciphered in only three minutes.
Therefore, passwords combining both length and complexity were considered to be the most secure. According to experts, a password containing 9 diverse characters will take five years to crack highlighting the critical importance of setting strong passwords to ensure your online security.
