A Competency-based training beneficiary of the TVET Sector Support Programme

She refused to give up!

Janta Bhawani is a true representation of fine resilience and saying no to all the odds of life. Janta went partially blind in her childhood and she kept on losing her eyesight with every passing year. Her parents stood by her side and always gave her the composure and courage which every special child needs to have in his or her life. She continued her education with other normal vision kids and ended up graduating in Physiotherapy.

Janta got married and took it as a challenge to struggle more in order to build a comfortable life for her two little kids. She tried hard to find a job in a private or a government hospital, in her respective field, but the responses were quite usual like,

“We loved your portfolio but our policy does not support hiring a special person for this job.”

As Janta says, ‘it was quite a dark period of my life but my parents kept me motivated and resilient with their positive energies. One day she got a promotional text message from Network of Organizations working with people with disabilities, Pakistan (NOWPDP), related to a customer care representative course for visually impaired people, which was supported by TVET Sector Support Programme.

This brought a new ray of hope to her life and she got herself enrolled in a three-month course in customer care representative. Janta completed the course where she got the chance to learn from industry experts that also comprised of visually impaired mentors who were already working in the industry for more than a decade. After the completion of her training, she received on-job training (OJT) for another three months. This directed her to a stable job in a well-reputed customer-care brand and now she is working as a customer care representative.

Janta strongly believes in steadfast hard work and persistence. She is grateful to the TVET Sector Support Programme for empowering her by training with a competency-based skill set which brought her new courage in life for attaining her goals.

Janta is the beneficiary of the TVET Sector Support Programme, which is working with NAVTTC, provincial TEVTAs, TVET bodies and PVTC since 2011 for bringing reforms to the TVET Sector. The second phase of the programme has funding of 67.5 mn euros for the implementation of reforms in the TVET sector of Pakistan on national, provincial and regional levels. The Programme is funded by the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Royal Norwegian Embassy. In the second phase of its implementation, the programme is supporting competency-based training of 88,300 men and women on the indigenous and industry-demand-driven trades. The Programme has been commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is being implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Janata said, “The training programme gave me the courage to lead a normal life even with my disability.”

Being disabled should not mean being disqualified from having access to every aspect of life…
