Chinese Man Fired and Fined PKR 2.5 Crore for Taking Costly Holidays While on Sick Leave

An individual employed in the technology industry in China was dismissed from his job after a co-worker discovered that he was vacationing on a tropical island while he was on sick leave and was expected to be recuperating in bed.

According to a report by China’s National Business Daily (NBD), a man named Xu Moumou challenged his tech company’s decision to terminate his employment at Beijing’s Third Intermediate People’s Court. However, the court rejected his appeal in mid-April 2023.

Furthermore, Xu was also stripped of a 620,000-yuan (approximately Rs. 2.5 Crore) compensation that he had been awarded earlier. The conflict between Xu and his employer began in July 2019 when he applied for a two-week paid leave, which was denied by his manager due to work pressure.

Despite informing his manager that he had already purchased tickets for a vacation to Hainan, a southern island in China, with his child, Xu’s request for leave was not approved. It’s noteworthy that Xu was a long-time employee of the company, having worked there since 1998.
