Cricket Likely to Make Return in Olympic After a Gap of 128 Years

Cricket is among the nine sports being considered for inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The men’s and women’s T20 cricket format is likely to be included, and a final decision is expected by the end of the year.

If approved, it would be cricket’s return to the Olympics after more than a century since it was last played in the 1900 Paris Olympics, where a one-off gold medal match was held. The proposal suggests a five-team competition for both men and women, and teams would qualify based on their rankings in the ICC World Rankings.

The International Olympic Committee has shortlisted cricket along with eight other sports for the LA 2028 Olympics, including baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kickboxing, squash, and motorsport. This decision is also influenced by a significant financial incentive for the committee.
