A woman living in Dubai, who is originally from India, made her mother’s wish come true by bringing back 10 kg of tomatoes from Dubai to India. Tomatoes have become very expensive in India, making this gesture meaningful. During her visit to India for her children’s summer holidays, the woman asked her mother what she wanted from Dubai, and her mother specifically requested tomatoes. To fulfill her mother’s request, she packed the tomatoes in large kitchen storage containers called Pearlpet dabbas and put them in her suitcase for the journey.
The woman’s sister, known as Revs on Twitter, shared this amusing incident on the platform. The post quickly became viral, attracting over 53.2k views. Many Twitter users were curious about customs and storage rules for bringing tomatoes from abroad. Revs explained that the 10 kg of tomatoes would be used to make pickles and chutneys, as their family consumes a large amount of tomatoes regularly.
The rising tomato prices have become a concern in India, with the average price increasing significantly in some areas. This has even led to incidents of tomato smuggling, like when customs officials intercepted three tonnes of tomatoes being brought in from Nepal. Despite these challenges, the expat’s thoughtful act to fulfill her mother’s wish has received praise on social media. Some users even called her the “best daughter” and a “saint of a daughter.”
