Asad Umar, the Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, presided over a meeting to assess the current status and progress of the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR). During the discussion, the secretary of Pakistan Railways informed the minister that the Karachi Circular Railway project was progressing according to the ministry’s schedules.
According to him, the KCR plans to build a 43-kilometer long world-class inexpensive mass transit system employing environmentally friendly electric trains. The minister was also informed on the Keamari to Pipri Marshalling Yard Freight Corridor.
The Freight Corridor project involves the construction, duplication, and upgrade of a 50-kilometer dedicated freight corridor from Karachi Port to Pipri, as well as the building of an inland container depot and marshalling yard in Pipri. The Project is planned to catch 40% of the cargo intended for upcountry transportation.
