Electricity Prices Likely to Increases by Rs. 1.72 Per Unit in Pakistan

Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including users of K-Electric, may experience another increase in power bills.

The increase could happen after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requested a rise of PKR 1.72 per unit under the monthly fuel cost adjustment for April.

The request will be reviewed by NEPRA, which is scheduled to hold a hearing on June 2 before making a final decision. If approved, the additional cost will be added to electricity bills for households and businesses across the country.

According to official figures, Pakistan produced around 9.50 billion units of electricity in April. The average cost of generating electricity during the month was reported at PKR 9.42 per unit.

Fuel cost adjustments are regularly applied to reflect changes in electricity generation expenses, which can result in increases or decreases in consumer bills.

Hydropower and nuclear energy remained the biggest sources of electricity generation in Pakistan during April. Coal and gas-based power generation also contributed significantly to the national energy supply. The mix of energy sources affects overall generation costs and can influence future electricity prices.

If the proposed increase receives approval, consumers already dealing with rising living expenses may face additional financial pressure. Higher electricity bills can impact household budgets as well as operating costs for businesses.

The decision by NEPRA will determine whether the requested surcharge is implemented. Until then, consumers across Pakistan are waiting for clarity on possible changes to their upcoming electricity bills and the overall impact on monthly expenses.
