A gardener in the United Kingdom has successfully grown an enormous onion weighing nearly 9 kilograms, possibly setting a new Guinness World Record. This gigantic vegetable was showcased at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in North Yorkshire from September 15 to 17.
According to the flower show, this “eye-watering enormous onion” weighed 8.97 kilograms on the first day of the event and has the potential to establish a new world record.
The current record for the heaviest onion stands at 8.5 kilograms, grown by Tony Glover in 2014. Gareth Griffin’s onion is approximately 0.5 kilograms heavier, but Guinness World Records verification is pending.
Gareth Griffin achieved this remarkable feat in the National English Honor Society (NEHS) Giant Vegetable Competition during the flower show. The competition also featured the weighing of other oversized vegetables like large cabbages, beetroots, and marrows.
Gareth Griffin’s passion for growing exceptionally large onions was inspired by his father, and he became deeply involved in pursuing this hobby after attending the world championships 12 years ago. He has been striving to break the record for the heaviest onion ever since.
