Hasan Nawaz, the son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has been officially named a “deliberate tax defaulter” by the UK’s tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
According to the latest defaulters list released by the UK government, Hasan failed to pay £9.4 million (about PKR 3.2 billion) in taxes for the years 2015 and 2016. As a result, he has been fined £5.2 million (around PKR 1.8 billion) as a penalty for non-payment.
Legal representatives of Hasan Nawaz argue that he had already paid the required taxes, but HMRC later demanded additional payments, which he challenged. They claim the dispute led to the current situation.
This is not the first financial trouble Hasan has faced in the UK. Last year, the London High Court declared him bankrupt in another tax-related case.
The case has attracted significant attention in Pakistan, where Hasan Nawaz and his family have long been in the political spotlight. His financial matters in the UK continue to raise questions, especially with his father, Nawaz Sharif, being a key political figure in Pakistan.
As of now, Hasan Nawaz has not publicly commented on the latest tax dispute. It remains unclear whether he will appeal the decision or settle the outstanding amount.
