Government of Punjab Designates PMEX for Trading of Wheat Electronic Warehouse Receipts

In a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s agricultural economy, the Government of Punjab (GoPb) has officially designated Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX) as the trading platform for Electronic Warehouse Receipts (EWRs) for wheat under the Chief Minister Punjab EWR Financing Facility.

Through this initiative, wheat stored in accredited warehouses will now be tradable on PMEX’s electronic platform. This gives farmers, traders, and investors access to competitive pricing, liquidity, and secure electronic transactions from the comfort of their mobile phones.

“We are honored to support the GoPb in this transformative step,” said Mr. Khurram Zafar, CEO of PMEX. “Our state-of-the-art platform will ensure farmers and traders benefit from real-time price discovery, transparency, and trust—key ingredients of a thriving agricultural trading ecosystem.”

EWRs are digital proof of commodity ownership, issued by licensed warehouses and backed by a robust ecosystem of collateral management companies, accredited warehouse operators, and banks. The model bridges post-harvest market gaps, reduces distress selling, and brings farmers into the formal financial fold while connecting them with a transparent, SECP regulated, electronic trading platform that supports nationwide price discovery.

This development aligns with the broader agenda of modernizing agri-markets and promoting financial inclusion in rural economies envisioned by GoPb, SECP and SBP. PMEX is proud to be a key partner in this transformation.
