The government has recently announced a significant increase in electricity tariffs for domestic consumers across Pakistan. This change affects households nationwide, raising the base tariff for domestic electricity usage to as much as Rs48.84 per unit.
This hike comes on the heels of increases in the petroleum levy and plans to introduce taxes on agricultural income.
According to the Power Division’s notification, this increase will also impact consumers in Karachi. However, there is an exception for those using up to 200 units per month; they will receive a three-month exemption from the rate hike.
This means that smaller households with lower electricity consumption won’t see an immediate increase in their bills.
The decision to raise electricity tariffs follows the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s (Nepra) approval of a federal request to increase the rates by up to Rs7.12 per unit across various consumer categories. This move aims to align domestic electricity prices with the rising costs of fuel and other inputs used in power generation.
The new tariff rates are expected to have widespread effects, increasing the cost of living for many Pakistani households. Consumers are encouraged to be mindful of their electricity usage and to plan for higher bills in the coming months.
