Govt Orders to Shut Down Karachi Zoo Permanently

The Karachi Zoo may be permanently shut down due to the terrible living conditions faced by the animals kept there. Noor Jehan, a 17-year-old elephant, was discovered to be in rapidly declining health, which brought the problem to light.

Despite a successful operation, the elephant’s condition has gotten worse because of months of subpar care and therapy.

Senator Sherry Rehman, the federal minister for climate change, has urged the province administration to shut down the zoo because it is unable to provide for wild animals in response to public uproar and involvement from foreign organisations.

The idea to move the animals to safer locations has also received approval from Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The idea is expected to be approved by the Sindh government now that it has the backing of these ministers.

Additionally, plans to convert current zoos into botanical gardens and centres for the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals have been put up.
