DG ISPR Major General Babar Iftikhar said on his official Twitter profile, “Nation pays homage to 2 Havaldar Lalak Jan; NH [Nishan-e-Haider], who lost his life protecting [the] homeland despite hy [heavy] odds in most trying battlefield conditions during Kargil conflict on 7 July 99.”
Havaldar Lalak Jan was serving in Company Headquarters in May 1999, while the enemy was preparing for a big offensive. He offered to fight on the front lines as a volunteer.
Jan bravely defended his post with only a few men, repelling many Indian raids and leaving scores of dead bodies in his wake. On July 7, the enemy bombarded his station with incredible firepower for the whole day. After then, a three-pronged night attack was launched.
Despite his grave injuries, he refused to be evacuated and successfully repelled the attack, causing the enemy to suffer heavy losses. Later, while defending the motherland, Havaldar Jan died to injuries and embraced Shahadat.
