Hyundai stated that its latest Ioniq 5 will do more than the typical electric vehicle. The car can generate up to 3.6 kilowatts of electricity, which is sufficient to power appliances such as refrigerators and stoves.
Hyundai claims to be the first major electric vehicle manufacturer to provide bi-directional charging, which allows owners to use the car’s battery to power electronic devices. Although conventional car batteries can be used to charge laptops and phones, they quickly drain when connected to something more efficient, such as a portable fridge or sound system, necessitating the installation of a dual-battery system or the transport of large, noisy generators by serious campers.
The Ioniq 5 also has the option of adding a solar-panel roof to charge the battery pack, extending the vehicle’s range by around 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) per year.
Heung Soo Kim, a senior vice president and head of product and EV businesses, says, “We looked at the broader sense of space, which would include outdoor and everyday activities that customers can do with their vehicles.”
