‘I am Surprised by the Decision, Rizwan was the Best Choice’, Shahid Afridi on Naming Babar Azam as Captain

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has shared his thoughts on the appointment of Babar Azam as the captain of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket team.

The 29-year-old Babar Azam has been reinstated as the skipper, taking over from Shaheen Afridi, who led the team in just one T20I series against New Zealand in January 2023.

The team’s performance in the five-match series, which they lost 1-4, raised concerns about Shaheen Afridi’s capabilities as a captain.

In his statement, Afridi expressed surprise at the decision made by the experienced cricketers on the selection committee. He believed that Mohammad Rizwan would have been a better choice if a change was deemed necessary.

However, Afridi stated that now that the decision has been made, he extends his full support and best wishes to team Pakistan and Babar Azam.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Babar Azam’s appointment as the white-ball captain through their official channels.

Following the unanimous recommendation from the PCB’s selection committee, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi officially appointed Babar Azam as the white-ball (ODI and T20I) captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team.
