India Makes History, Becomes First Country to Successfully Land on Lunar South Pole of Moon

On Wednesday, India did something amazing! They became the first country to land a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole. This is a place that no one has gone before, and scientists think it might have frozen water. The spacecraft had a rover inside, and it landed at 6:04 in the morning local time. People in the city of Bengaluru, India, where the space scientists were watching, cheered and clapped when it happened.

India tried this before in 2019, but it didn’t work. Now, they’ve done it, and they’re the fourth country to land on the moon. The other countries that did this are the United States, the Soviet Union, and China.

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, was in South Africa for a meeting. He saw the amazing landing from there and said, “India is now on the moon. India has reached the south pole of the moon — no other country has achieved that. We are witnessing history.” He was waving the flag of India while he said this.
