Karachi Grammar School Completes 175 years

On an occasion of 175th anniversary celebration, it would be fun if the open house is organized at Karachi Public School this year, and invite passed out students to celebrate its 175th anniversary just like century celebration in 1947.

It would be a great get together and on this memorial occasion stamp or coin to be issued or might be both.

In 1847 Rev H Brereton, the first preacher of Karachi, started the Anglo-Indian School in his home’s kitchen. The school gives out the Brereton Award to students with exceptional grades in this honour.

It was renamed as the Kurrachee European and Indo-European School. In 1854, due to reports on the reverend’s performance, Sir HB Frere reopened the school in the Mess House of Her Majesty’s 64th Regiment at No. 24 Depot Lines.

In 1875, the school was expended and made it into a purpose-built facility now known as the Saddar Campus by Rev GB Streeton.

Many students remember the memorable morning assembly held in the hall which was built in 1912.

The name of Karachi Grammar School was invented in 1879.

The sections system was introduced in 1929 which was converted into Frere with the names of ‘Bravely, Faithfully, Happily’, ‘Streeton’,Excelsior’, and ‘Napier’.

The century of KGS was celebrated in 1947, and War Memorial Block was inaugurated in 1949 in which many students studied.

In 1956 the school crest was changed, and ‘Lucerna Meis Pedibus’ was mentioned on it, with its literal meaning ‘A lantern to my feet’, or ‘Enlighten my pathway’.

On the new logo, the school’s motto and foundation year were also mentioned.

In 1962, the Kindergarten Section was inaugurated in the Holy Trinity Cathedral Compound which was shifted to Clifton in 1991 with Junior section was also shifted from Saddar Campus with all the modern facilities including pool.

Moreover, in 1999 the collage section was also inaugurated in Clifton with another house in the memory of JL Papworth, OBE, music teacher, vice-principal, bursar and principal. The house named as Papworth House with the motto ‘Virtue Conquers All’.

Board of governors are managing the school and the principal is its secretary. Further all the three sections kindergarten and junior, middle, and college — are managed by the heads of these sections.
