Lahore has been ranked as the world’s most polluted city, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a hazardous level of 303, according to data from IQAir. This alarming figure reflects the dangerous state of air pollution in the city, which far exceeds safe levels. Karachi, Pakistan’s economic hub, also made the list as the fourth most polluted city globally, with an AQI close to 200. The situation is concerning for millions of residents in these cities who are exposed to harmful air every day.
The level of PM2.5 particles in Lahore’s air is 24.2 times higher than what the World Health Organization (WHO) considers safe. These tiny particles are dangerous because they can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, causing serious health problems. Other cities in Pakistan are also struggling with high pollution levels. Multan recorded an AQI of 294, Rawalpindi 220, and Peshawar 204, while Islamabad, the capital city, reported an AQI of 170. Experts point to vehicle emissions and industrial activity as the main reasons behind this environmental crisis.
The thick smog hanging over cities like Lahore and Karachi not only makes it difficult to breathe but also increases the risk of long-term health issues, especially for vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women. Medical professionals are warning that exposure to such polluted air can lead to respiratory problems, heart diseases, and complications in childbirth. This crisis is a wake-up call for authorities and citizens to take urgent measures to reduce pollution and protect public health.
