Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik Set to Become ISI’s First PhD Chief

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new director-general of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), making history as the first chief of the agency to hold a PhD. He will officially take on this role on September 30.

Gen Malik earned his doctorate from the National Defence University, where his research focused on the complex relationship between Pakistan and the United States. This academic background provides him with valuable insights into the diplomatic and strategic dynamics that define the interactions between the two countries. His appointment was confirmed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif following recommendations from military leadership.

With a wealth of experience in the military, Gen Malik has previously served as the adjutant general at the General Headquarters and has commanded infantry divisions in Balochistan. He also led military operations in Waziristan, showcasing his leadership abilities in challenging environments. His close relationship with Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir is well-known, and he has turned down significant postings in the past, reflecting his strong connections within the military community.

Gen Malik succeeds Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum, who has held the position since November 2021. His military credentials are impressive; he was awarded the prestigious Sword of Honor from the Pakistan Military Academy and has undergone specialized training in both the United States and the United Kingdom. This diverse training equips him with a thorough understanding of Western strategic perspectives, which will be beneficial in his new role.

As the new head of the ISI, General Malik will play a crucial role in shaping the agency’s direction and strategies during a time when security challenges in the region continue to evolve. His extensive experience and academic qualifications are expected to bring a fresh perspective to the intelligence community in Pakistan.
