Mari Petroleum Discovers Gas Reserves in North Waziristan

Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MARI), a major player in Pakistan’s oil and gas sector, has reported a significant gas discovery at the Shewa-2 well in North Waziristan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As the operator of the Waziristan Block, MARI holds a 55% working interest, partnering with OGDCL and OPI with 35% and 10% working interests, respectively.

The Shewa-2 well, drilled to a depth of 4,577 meters, aimed to appraise the Lockhart and Hangu formations, building on the discoveries made in the Shewa-1 exploratory well. During the Drill Stem Test in the Kawagarh formation, the company observed a gas flow of 0.607 MMSCFD, affirming the hydrocarbon potential of this exploratory target.

The Lockhart and Hangu formations were further appraised, showcasing extensions of the hydrocarbon play in these areas. Notably, the Lockhart formation in Shewa-2 demonstrated a substantial gas flow rate of 51 MMSCFD and 391 barrels of condensate per day. These successful tests indicate the presence of significant hydrocarbon reserves.

MARI’s exploration success rate, standing at around 70%, surpasses industry averages, which typically range around 33% nationally and 14% internationally. This reflects the company’s proficiency in identifying and extracting hydrocarbons.

The company’s diverse customer base includes fertilizer manufacturers, power generation companies, gas distribution entities, and refineries. This gas discovery at Shewa-2 contributes to Pakistan’s energy sector by increasing the available natural gas reserves. Additionally, MARI’s recent success in drilling a horizontal well in District Daharki, Sindh, adds to its track record of achievements.

MARI’s continued exploration and successful discoveries underscore its role in shaping Pakistan’s energy landscape and contributing to the country’s energy security. The developments at Shewa-2 align with the company’s commitment to sustainable resource development and strengthening the domestic energy sector.
