Iran’s funeral committee has announced that the procession and burial of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will happen after the first ten days of Muharram and Ashura. This decision comes from official statements shared by WANA Iran and other sources.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former Supreme Leader, was killed on February 28, 2026, in US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran. He was 86 years old. The Iranian government called him a martyr, and many Shia Muslims see his death as a holy sacrifice.
The committee said they need more time to organize large national events. They want millions of Shia mourners from Iran and around the world to fully observe the holy days of Muharram without any break. Ashura, a very important day of mourning for Shia Muslims, is expected around June 25 or 26, 2026.
Preparations for the official ceremonies are going on in cities like Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. Officials expect huge crowds, with reports of up to 20 million people possibly attending over three days of events. The burial will likely be in Mashhad.
This delay follows earlier postponements due to the ongoing conflict. The funeral will be a major national farewell to honor Khamenei’s long rule and his role in Iran’s Islamic Revolution.
