Meta’s recently launched social media platform, Threads, has achieved an impressive milestone by attracting 100 million users worldwide within just one week. This surpasses the previous record set by AI tool ChatGPT, which took two months to reach the same milestone.
However, when compared to established platforms like Facebook with 2.9 billion users and Instagram with 2 billion users, Threads still has a significant gap to close. Twitter, considered as its main competitor, boasts a user base of around 300 to 500 million. While Threads has gained attention and popularity, Twitter has responded by subtly and not-so-subtly referencing the competition.
Twitter’s legal team even sent a letter to Meta, accusing them of infringing on intellectual property rights. Legal battles can be lengthy and resource-intensive. The success of Threads will depend on its ability to keep users interested and engaged over the long term.
This challenge is evident from the case of Google+, which experienced an initial surge in sign-ups but struggled to provide lasting value and maintain user engagement.
