The prices of essential food items, including milk and meat, have seen a sharp increase in the open market, adding to the financial burden on households already struggling with rising living costs. Consumers have reported that milk is being sold at rates ranging from Rs. 220 to Rs. 250 per litre, far above the officially fixed price of Rs. 170 per litre. This significant difference has raised concerns over weak price regulation and market monitoring.
Yogurt prices have also climbed noticeably, with retailers charging between Rs. 260 and Rs. 270 per kilogram in several areas. Citizens say the widening gap between official and market rates reflects a lack of effective enforcement, allowing sellers to charge higher prices without accountability.
At the same time, the cost of meat continues to soar, with premium quality mutton reportedly reaching as high as Rs. 3,500 per kilogram in some markets. The sharp rise in prices of daily-use food items has sparked public concern, with many demanding stricter action against overpricing, profiteering, and better implementation of government-set rates to protect consumers.
