Shafqat Mahmood, the Federal Minister of Education and Vocational Training, has declared that non-Muslim students will be taught their own theologies instead of Islamic Studies in schools.
He said this during a meeting with Christian Turner, the British High Commissioner during which they discussed the Single National Curriculum (SNC) and other issues.
Minister Mahmood stated that separate religious studies subjects have been prepared in consultation with religious leaders and scholars for students from the minority Christian, Hindu, Sikh and Kailash groups, and that they will be taught accordingly.
He also mentioned that up to the fifth grade, English, Mathematics, and Science will be taught in the English medium, while Urdu and Islamic Studies will be taught in the Urdu medium. In addition to Social Studies and General Knowledge in Urdu, the fifth-grade curriculum will include English terms in these subjects. From sixth to eighth grade, the English language components of these subjects will be progressively increased.
After eighth grade, students have the option of pursuing an International or National Qualification of their choosing.
