Telecom companies have warned against suspending their services as hours of power outages have compounded their problems.
In a joint letter to the PTA (Pakistan Telecommunications Authority), telecom operators indicated they would suspend phone and broadband services as the government imposed a 100% cash margin requirement on imports of related equipment.
They say that providing continuous backup power to towers and facilities has become a problem.
Telecom Companies also cited difficulties keeping cell towers running with gas-powered backup systems.
The development comes after the government hikes petrol prices to Rs.233.89 per litre. Previously, the Telecom Authority stated that cell phone companies could not shut down their services like other utilities.
It found that operators must provide uninterrupted telecommunications services to subscribers under their licenses.
