More than 600% Increase in Green Spaces in Makkah Region Over 5 Months

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification has reported an impressive 600% increase in the amount of greenery across the Makkah region from August to December 2023.

This substantial growth, covering a total area of 26,256 square kilometers by the end of the year, is credited to significant rainfall, reaching up to 200 mm in some areas. By December, vegetation covered 17.1% of Makkah’s total area, with a focus on the mountains and highlands along the Red Sea coast.

The center employs advanced technology such as remote sensing and artificial intelligence to monitor various aspects, including tree-planting projects, alterations in land cover, rainfall levels, and the overall health of plants.

These efforts are in line with Saudi Arabia’s Green initiative, emphasizing environmental sustainability. The use of technology enhances the country’s ability to address issues like drought and contributes to the preservation of green spaces.
