Nestlé Pakistan’s Commitment to Sustainable Water Management: A Precedent For Creating Shared Value

As concerns about water management escalate, Nestlé Pakistan has emerged as a leader in addressing this pressing issue through its proactive and responsible approach to water stewardship. Recognizing the planet’s dependence on water and the challenges posed by rapid population growth, climate change, and inefficiencies in agricultural water use, Nestlé Pakistan has committed itself to a comprehensive strategy for water resource management.

Addressing Water Challenges

Nestlé Pakistan’s initiatives are driven by a strong commitment to sustainability and are reflected in their flagship program, Caring for Water-Pakistan (C4W-Pakistan), which began in 2017. This program serves as a model for collective action, uniting diverse stakeholders to tackle the country’s water challenges. The program focuses on three key areas: Agriculture, Factories, and Communities.

Strategic Goals and Achievements

In 2021, Nestlé Pakistan took a significant step by launching the Waters Pledge, aiming to enhance the water cycle and make a positive impact by 2025. This pledge builds on the foundation established by C4W-Pakistan and underscores Nestlé’s role as a global leader in water sustainability.

One notable achievement is the company’s Sheikhupura Factory, which was recognized as the first site in Pakistan and the first Nestlé site worldwide to receive the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) certification in 2017. This certification, an international benchmark for freshwater management, reflects Nestlé’s dedication to responsible water resource management. Subsequent certifications were awarded to factories in Islamabad, Kabirwala, and Karachi, making Nestlé Pakistan the first market in the world to achieve AWS certification across all its sites by 2020.

Innovative Local Solutions

Nestlé Pakistan’s approach includes leveraging local solutions to address specific regional challenges. For instance, the company has collaborated with the Centre for Water Informatics & Technology (WIT) at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) to develop low-cost smart soil moisture sensors. These sensors help farmers optimize irrigation practices by providing real-time soil moisture data, enhancing water use efficiency on 548 acres of farmland as of 2023.

Additionally, Nestlé has promoted the adoption of drip irrigation over conventional flood irrigation, supporting the installation of drip systems on over 300 acres, with a significant portion in Sindh.

Community Impact

Nestlé Pakistan is also dedicated to improving community access to clean water. The company has established eight Clean and Safe Drinking Water Facilities, benefiting over 80,000 individuals with free daily access to safe drinking water. Through its multifaceted approach, Nestlé Pakistan demonstrates a commitment to sustainable water management that aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By fostering collaboration and innovation, Nestlé Pakistan sets a benchmark for corporate responsibility in water stewardship.
