New Grade System to be Introduced in Matric, Inter Exams

The Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) has taken a significant step towards transforming the educational landscape in Pakistan by introducing a new 10-point grading system for matric and inter examinations. This initiative, set to be implemented in 2024 for classes 9th and 11th, aims to shift the focus from the traditional marks-oriented approach to a more holistic evaluation of students.

The transition from a 7-point to a 10-point grading system (A++, A+, A, B++, B+, B, C, D, E, U) is a deliberate effort to discourage the relentless pursuit of maximum marks, known as the ‘marks race.’ By providing a broader spectrum of grades, the new system intends to promote a healthier learning environment, emphasizing understanding and knowledge acquisition over mere rote memorization.

IBCC Chairman Ghulam Ali Mallah emphasized the need to alleviate the pressure on students, parents, and institutions, fostering a culture that values quality education. The 10-point grading scheme reflects a global trend in educational assessment, aligning Pakistan with international standards.

During a workshop in Sindh dedicated to implementing the new grading scheme, IBCC Chairman Mallah highlighted the positive response from Sindh Examination Boards, showcasing their commitment to progressive changes for improved education and assessment practices.

BSEK Chairman Sharaf Ali Shah supported the initiative, noting that the new grading system would bring ease to both students and teachers. Acknowledging the evolving landscape of education, Shah emphasized the importance of adapting assessment systems to meet the evolving needs of students. The global prevalence of such grading systems further strengthens the case for this transformative change.

Importantly, the shift in the grading policy does not impact the qualifications, as the scheme of studies remains unchanged. This ensures continuity and stability in the educational framework while enhancing the assessment and evaluation process to better serve students in a rapidly changing educational landscape.
