Recently, a team of nine Pakistani students from the Institute of Space Technology in Islamabad (IST) won first place in Turkey’s TEKNOFEST Aerospace and Technology Festival’s International Free Mission UAV Competition.
The competition was held in Busra, and over 240 teams from over 85 countries competed, with the team from IST being one of them. Through a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles, the team had built a winning Artificial Intelligence-based solution for Human Search and Rescue operations.
These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were created for optimal path planning and human identification in post-disaster scenarios. From a height of 30-50 metres, the UAVs can scan a disaster region for injured citizens.
Because of the project’s significant value in terms of offering a true solution, IST won first prize in the silver category and overall fourth place in the competition. The team also received a monetary prize of 36,000 Turkish Lira for winning.
