The government has officially ended the provision of free electricity units for employees working in the power sector after approval from the Lahore High Court. This decision marks the end of a long-standing benefit that had been under discussion for some time.
According to officials, the decision was taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as part of wider reforms in the energy sector. The move was presented to the court, which accepted the government’s petition and allowed the policy change to proceed.
Federal Minister Awais Leghari described the decision as an important and historic reform. He said it promotes fairness, transparency, and equal treatment for all consumers.
Previously, employees in the power sector were given free electricity units as part of their job benefits. However, this practice had faced criticism from the public, especially at a time when electricity prices were rising and many consumers were struggling with high bills.
Officials said that ending this benefit reflects the government’s effort to respond to public concerns and reduce unnecessary financial burdens on the power system. It is also seen as part of broader structural reforms aimed at improving efficiency and financial discipline in the energy sector.
The government believes that such steps will help bring more transparency and fairness to the electricity system. It also aims to reduce overall pressure on the national power sector and improve service delivery for consumers.
