Pakistan Has Approved 10 Agro and Non-agro Products for GI Registration

In response to India’s attempt to label Basmati rice as an uniquely Indian brand in the European Union market, the Ministry of Commerce has approved a list of ten products for Geographical Indication (GI) registration.

These include agro and non-agro products that will become international brands for Pakistan. Following the cabinet’s approval a month ago, the procedure of GI registration has also begun.

The Commerce Division had emphasized to the cabinet in April 2021 that GI is similar to intellectual property rights (IPRs) in that when it is awarded to a product originating from a certain country, it brings with it the signature quality and reputation attributed to the location of origin.
