Pakistan Launches $50 Million Project to Upgrade Weather System

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced a $50 million initiative in partnership with the World Bank to upgrade its forecasting capabilities. The project aims to install advanced radar systems and establish 300 automated weather stations across the country.

Given that Pakistan ranks fifth in climate vulnerability, this upgrade is crucial for improving weather forecasts and public safety. PMD Director General Sahibzad Khan confirmed that $40 million will be allocated in the first phase, with the project operationalized this week.

The new infrastructure will significantly enhance data collection and accuracy, enabling better responses to extreme weather events affecting agriculture and infrastructure.
