Pakistan Makes Fake News Punishable Through Presidential Ordinance

President Arif Alvi has recently signed two ordinances amending the 2016 Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and the 2017 Elections Act.

After receiving cabinet approval, the president signed both the laws.

The definition of a “person” has been enlarged under the PECA ordinance to encompass any firm, association, institution, organization, authority, or other entity.

Furthermore, anyone found guilty of harming a person’s “identity” will now face a five-year term rather than the previous three-year sentence.

In addition, the aggreived person, his authorized representative, his guardian if he is a minor, or “a member of the public in respect of a public figure or a holder of public office” have been defined as the complainant.
