Pakistani PhD student Saniya Khurshid has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the first-ever People’s Choice Poster Award at the UK’s 5th Commonwealth Chemistry Poster Competition, themed “Building Networks to Address the Goals.” This event highlighted research aimed at global sustainability and development goals.
Saniya is a PhD candidate at the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry at the University of Karachi, where she has been working on innovative research with real-world impact. Her award-winning poster, titled “Electrochemical Detection of Creatinine at Pico-Molar Scale in Human Body Fluids for Diagnosis of Kidney Dysfunction,” presents a breakthrough approach for detecting creatinine at extremely low concentrations. This work is significant for diagnosing kidney problems early, making it an important step forward in healthcare research.
In the virtual competition, organized by the Federation of Chemical Sciences Societies in the UK, Saniya’s poster stood out among 180 entries from 28 different countries. Professor Dr. Farzana Shaheen, who heads the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi, congratulated Saniya and her supervisor, Dr. Imran Malik, on this achievement. Dr. Shaheen emphasized that Saniya’s success demonstrates the growing influence of Pakistani researchers on the global stage, showing how their work is making a positive impact worldwide.
This accomplishment not only brings pride to Pakistan but also underscores the importance of fostering young talent in science and research, as Saniya’s work contributes to advancements in sustainable development and healthcare solutions.
