Pakistan’s First Human Milk Bank Opened in Karachi

Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho has launched Pakistan’s first Shariah-compliant Human Milk Bank and Early Childhood Centre at the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN) in Karachi. This facility, created with support from Unicef, will provide donor milk to babies who cannot be breastfed by their mothers.

During the inauguration, Dr. Azra Pechuho stressed how crucial mother’s milk is for newborns, highlighting its role in providing the best nutrition and boosting immunity. Prof. Jamal Raza explained that the facility will collect, process, and distribute donor milk while strictly following Shariah guidelines.

Unicef representative Abdullah Fadil praised the initiative and committed to supporting more projects like this across Pakistan.

This new centre aims to ensure that all infants have access to the essential nutrients and immune protection provided by human milk, even if they cannot receive it from their biological mothers. The opening of this facility marks a significant step forward in improving early childhood health and nutrition in the country.
