Pakistan’s Parliament to Elect New Prime Minister Tomorrow

Nomination papers for Shehbaz Sharif and Omar Ayub have been given the green light for the upcoming National Assembly elections, where they’ll vie for the position of Prime Minister or Leader of the House. The elections are slated for Sunday at 11 am.

Shehbaz Sharif, representing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Omar Ayub, backed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), have been endorsed as candidates.

Shehbaz Sharif enjoys support from various parties including the MQM-P, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, and PPP, which increases his chances of winning. On the other hand, Omar Ayub faces a challenge as he lacks sufficient support from lawmakers.

The election for the Prime Minister’s office is scheduled for March 3, while on March 9, newly-elected lawmakers will convene to elect a new head of state, marking the end of President Arif Alvi’s term.
