Punjab government signed a deal to construct small, intermediate dams

The Punjab administration reached an agreement to contruct small and intermediate dams in the province to utilize water resources better.

The provincial Irrigation ministry and NESPAK inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in a ceremony that was also attended by CM Punjab Usman Buzdar, according to details.

A feasibility assessment would be conducted using current drone technology to construct minor and intermediate dams at thirteen hill torrents under the terms of the MoU.

The pilot project for the construction of the reservoirs, according to Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, will begin in June this year. “The water reservoirs will assist provides water to 200,000 acres of land while also reducing flood damage and losses,” he said.

It is important to note that, in addition to Punjab province, minor and large dams have been planned and built in other parts of the country to ensure improved water resource utilization.

According to a source, 25 small dams were completed in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in July 2019 to hold flood and rainwater during the monsoon for agricultural and drinking purposes.
