Samosa-Selling Boy ‘Zahid’ Now in 8th Grade, Achieving Educational Success as Head Boy after School Principal Took Responsibility for His Education

Zahid, the samosa-selling boy whose story captured social media’s attention in February 2020, has taken a positive stride. Basim Ahmed Faridi, the Principal of Speak & Spell School, shared a recent update on Zahid’s educational success, highlighting the power of social media in transforming lives.

Zahid, initially known for his resilience as an 11-year-old breadwinner for his large family, caught the attention of Faridi, who decided to take on the responsibility of his education. Faridi emphasized the enduring impact of education compared to fleeting financial support, and this decision has proven to be transformative for Zahid.

As of the last week of December 2023, Zahid is thriving in his studies, currently in Class VIII, and has become an integral part of the school’s academic and co-curricular activities. Impressively, he is not only excelling academically but also serves as the Head Boy in the school’s Student Council, showcasing his newfound confidence and leadership skills.

Faridi clarified that the school is fully sponsoring Zahid’s education, covering all associated costs, including course fees, stationary, note books, and pick & drop fees. Moreover, the generosity extends to Zahid’s two younger brothers, who are also enrolled in the school.

Speaking on the initiative, Faridi underscored that this is not a charity act or a form of Zakat/Sadqa but an obligation as a private school. He explained that registered private schools, according to Sindh Educational Board regulations, are bound to teach 5% of students free of cost.

Faridi urged other private schools to follow suit and contribute to society by offering education to deserving students. He shared Zahid’s achievements on social media to inspire positive change and encourage other schools to make a difference.

While Zahid’s educational needs are met, Faridi expressed a hope for a private university to step forward and offer him a scholarship in his desired field. Given Zahid’s entrepreneurial spirit and the lessons learned through his earlier street-side business, Faridi believes this could pave the way for a successful future.

The story of Zahid serves as a beacon of positivity, illustrating the transformative impact of education and the potential for societal change when individuals come together to support the dreams of young learners.
