The research study on “Cooling Asphalt Surfaces” has started with some testing by the Public Authority for Roads in Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality, Rural Affairs, and Housing.
The reason for this experience is that the roads, which can occasionally reach 70 degrees Celsius, absorb the heat from the sun during the day.
The techniques also re-release this heat scientifically at night, which results in the “heat island phenomenon,” a condition that raises energy demand and air pollution.
As an experiment was started with the use of what is known as cold pavements, which are a variety of handmade materials that have the ability to absorb lower amounts of solar radiation, the necessity to solve the “heat island issue” became apparent.
